How to antique furniture with paint. Yeah, I tell you my secret!! http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-antique-furniture-with-paint-yeah-i-tell-you-my-secret/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-antique-furniture-with-paint-yeah-i-tell-you-my-secret/#comments Mon, 07 Nov 2011 16:03:51 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=161 It’s curious: when an object is old, instead of loose decorative value , it wins. The antiques are among the accessories to furnish and decorate with a high economic cost, and not only that, it’s very common give modern things a finish that makes them look aging. They are like many other trends in fashion and decoration.

It is not always the best decision to leave perfect the surface of an object when you paint it, or make it look “as new”. Perhaps the aspect of “new” doesn’t  match with the environment and need to add an air of mystery and antiquity on the piece. There are many techniques that can be applied to achieve an old look.

There is a way to restore antique furniture and transform it into an interesting decorative option in many areas: the processes of antique. They allow give a rustic touch to our environments, combining this with the distinction and elegance of style that often characterized the older furniture.

The big problem is that antique furniture may not be in a good condition, and many times the cost of repairs can be very large. So, with the purpose of giving personality and character to the furniture, antique techniques can be applied to furniture.

The method of antique furniture involves applying dark stains and varnishes, but always taking into account the context in which the furniture is placed, to choose the final tone. The dyes are applied using a flat brush, always two layers and wait the  first layer dries completely before apply the second one.

Then you can use one layer of cream varnish, especially suited for its higher viscosity. When the furniture dries , you should apply a layer of polish to dark it. As the coating dries, it’s better to rub with a cloth to avoid finishing too dark.

Finally you should rub the piece with a squeaky clean cloth, with the aim of providing the highest possible brightness . This allows you to renovate completely a piece of furniture in poor condition. Now it looks the typical charm of antique furniture.

Antique white paint

The name of this beautiful style may vary: white aged, pickled white …  But in any case we are referring to the same: white painted furniture, with an attractive touch as if the passage of the time had left her imprint.

Of course, some old furniture have this touch and it makes them special, but get the same effect is not difficult, and this technique can renew very effectively any furniture that we want to upgrade. In addition, the antique white finish is not just for old furniture, the most modern lines, like a child’s bedroom, are also perfect with this technique.

First, we must check materials. To give an antique white finish to our furniture, we need a sealer (acrylic if the furniture is clean wood, synthetic, if they are varnished or painted), enamel or acrylic lacquer enamel-white (last is more resistant), colorless wax yellow furniture, asphalt, sand # 180 and # 400, roller glazing, good quality flat brush and an old shoe brush.

The furniture that we will recover must have a good surface paint grip . To achieve this there is no need to mess with the stripper lifting layer after layer of varnish or paint, unless, of course, concerned a cabinet and painted with a thick layer defects. Otherwise, just pass a No. 180 sandpaper lightly across the surface and apply a coat of synthetic enamel roller. The brush will be use to cover corners that the brush don’t get .

If the cabinet is bare wood, we can use acrylic sealer, which gives off less odor, dries before and you can wash it with water. Once the sealer dries, it’s time to give the enamel. Also applied to the roller glazing, well spread. Each layer of enamel (up to a total of three) should be left to dry and then sand it with sandpaper # 400 to make it smooth and soft. After the last layer, pass the sandpaper # 180 for the frames and parts of furniture to let the wood look, as if the cabinet had worn over time.

The final touch is provided by the patina. To make it, take a can of wax, remove one-tenth of the content and fill the hole with asphalt. Then heat the wax in the microwave or double boiler until melted and mix with bitumen. Then move the contents well and allow to cold. When it’s cold, apply all over the furniture, and extended to penetrate the gaps. Two hours later it’s time to polish, rubbing the brush thoroughly with the shoe brush.

How to decore your vintage kitchen… A lot of tips! http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-decore-your-vintage-kitchen-a-lot-of-tips/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-decore-your-vintage-kitchen-a-lot-of-tips/#comments Fri, 04 Nov 2011 18:58:56 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=113 In this article I’ll talk about retro decor, specially in kitchens. This is a place that offers many possibilities to give it an aspect of earlier decades. If you’re nostalgic for the old days and want to turn your kitchen into a special place, don’t miss the following ideas we’ll give you.

Use colors as blue, orange or brown combined with checkerboard design soils . The red, white and black are combinations we can also find in the decades of 50s and 60s. Regarding the materials that can be found in this type of kitchen, we have metals, glass and brass (laminated tables too).

If you already have a kitchen counter, you can choose and buy a table with a laminated surface or a metal refrigerator door. In general, anything that looks of past decades will look good in your kitchen retro.

Once you have decided the color palette you plan to use, we recommend you bring up some cards with these colors. In this way, you can choose the best combination when you buy furniture and accessories.

In the kitchen you can add kitchen towels, tables and chairs with a lovely retro look. You have two options: find old items at a reasonable price or buy new with a retro style marked.

There are some websites that offer a variety of retro products for your kitchen. For example, in BigChillFridge you can find ovens, refrigerators and dishwashers with a truly vintage look.

Now let’s deal with the lighting. This will be responsible for highlighting the colors and brilliant designs of our retro style kitchen. Choose geometric shapes lamps and bulbs that are partially exposed. Anyway don’t forget that decorating a kitchen should be practical.

You can choose between different retro accessories. One of the most popular are the Coca-Cola advertisements or the kitchen accessories such as hand towels, serving trays and table cloths. The Coca logo is typical of the post-World War II. You can also place a series of retro items like salt and pepper shakers or old cans of biscuits.

Don’t install air conditioning. Adopt a better idea: Get a fan of past decades. Choose a pink or avocado green. Finally, buy a apron! This mustn’t fail to complement the retro decor of your kitchen.

Antique modern wood furniture http://www.vintagekitchen.org/antique-modern-wood-furniture/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/antique-modern-wood-furniture/#comments Thu, 03 Nov 2011 14:17:48 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=155 When we buy a new wood furniture, sometimes it doesn’t match with the rest of the furnitures in the house. Not because we buy a different style (which would be very foolish indeed), but because of the years old furnitures have a touch of vintage.

One option to equal all the pieces that make our home, is to wait the time go on passing, but this will take many years. Another option much more practical and quick is to apply products. With proper technique, will give new furniture, desired old finish .

In this pictures you can see the vintage effects we can give our modern furnitures.

How to antique kitchen furniture http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-antique-kitchen-furniture/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/how-to-antique-kitchen-furniture/#comments Thu, 03 Nov 2011 13:42:25 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=159 The process of antique furniture with white finishing has been fashionable during several years and probably won’t loose its importance for  several years. This kind of painting is perfect for recycling a piece of furniture you have out there, and you don’t find attractive anymore. Of course, if it’s old or hardwood, don’t touch it, would be a shame!

I refer to furniture made of veneer chipboard, melamine, wood as pine … Or those other 70′s furniture that some of us have inherited from our parents, and have that terrible crystallized gloss varnish we can’t remove.

Convert any of these items in an elegant white decor paper stripping is easier than you think. At first, you have to apply a coat of synthetic sealant over the surface of the cabinet with a foam roller. Don’t worry if it isn’t well covered, , the important is to create a gripping surface for painting.

Then apply two layers of white enamel or lacquer also with foam roller. After of this, sand lightly with sandpaper # 400 slightly moistened with soapy water and dry well afterwards.

At the end,  apply a sanding block with sandpaper # 280 at the corners and protruding areas, removing the wood underneath to give the furniture an antique look. The white paint will acquire a great vintage look if you apply a layer of patina.

The patina is applied with a brush extending and withdrawing it gently with a cloth. The next day you can make it shine, if you change the handles on the cabinet by a shell type, the result is perfect!

Retro vs. Modern, two fashion styles for your kitchen http://www.vintagekitchen.org/retro-vs-modern-two-fashion-styles-for-your-kitchen/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/retro-vs-modern-two-fashion-styles-for-your-kitchen/#comments Mon, 17 Oct 2011 20:49:46 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=101 How have the kitchen cabinets changed through the years? The fronts are still very similar to the old ones, but now the stoves of the modern kitchens are higher, reaching to the ceiling or leaving a little air above the top of the cabinet.

Tend to occupy the whole wall, against the retro tendency to separate furnitures.
Those old kitchens seemed more flexibly, far from the compact kitchens to which we are accustomed today.
Retro modern kitchen decor

Another detail is that each of the basic elements in any kitchen has moved : fridge, place of cooking and sink.
Before they were all three in a row, each one with its own module, but now they can be integrated into the cabinets and counter tops, and in a less pre-established order. And even we separate the three areas with a kitchen island to save space and comfort. Not to mention the comfort that marked the arrival of the hobs in the kitchen, with its latest version, the touch ones.

About decoration in kitchens, the walls used to be always white, hence always very simply combined with any furniture. Today, innovation, contrast and color mixing, is the order of the day and we can combine shades of gray or a shade on the wall with some furniture.

Probably the old kitchens remember how well your mother cooked, or the good times you spent in your old home.
But now let’s think about the good times that can happen in your future kitchen, watching your children grow, as your parents used to see your.

Tips to decorate narrow kitchens http://www.vintagekitchen.org/tips-to-decorate-narrow-kitchens/ http://www.vintagekitchen.org/tips-to-decorate-narrow-kitchens/#comments Fri, 14 Oct 2011 13:55:09 +0000 http://www.vintagekitchen.org/?p=103 A long and narrow kitchen is often hard to decorate, especially due to the lack of space (or excess in one way). They tend to have the furniture on one side or both, leaving a narrow corridor and sometimes no window, which does not give us many options, but in here we´ll try to solve your problem.

The best option on the walls is paint them with semigloss painting. Pale yellow, peach or blue highlight natural lines of your kitchen.

As for soil, a bright ceramic tiles will make your kitchen look bigger by reflecting light. Especially if you choose pale materials. In addition, the lighting in these cases becomes a factor. Good light, both as direct reflections, always generates amplitude. The main light in the ceiling and auxiliary lights in specific areas will make everything seem not so tight.

Try to maximize storage space, and instead of traditional doors, if you have the option to install sliding doors will gain a few yards of gold as far as space is concerned. Or else, you can place without any problem many low furniture assembled, and stores the maximum space to good use.  The utensils placed on the wall instead of storing in drawers can save you extra.

And finally, appliances, following a triangle distribution in the kitchen should be on the opposite side of the cooking area. Also, keep in mind the order, a good idea is to place depending on the preparation of a meal: a refrigerator, sink and dishwasher. And keep in mind the color: stainless steel and white reflect light better and make it more spacious.
